Lanai

Lanai (the pineapple island) is the quiet, serene island. The only town is Lanai City. It is a good place to do some fishing, hunting, hiking, snorkeling, scuba diving, horse riding, kayaking, or bike riding. Many of the island's landmarks and sites are located off of dirt roads where four-wheel drive is required.

Lānai was first seen by Europeans on February 25, 1779, when Captain Charles Clerke sighted the island from aboard James Cook's HMS Resolution. Clerke had taken command of the ship after Cook was killed at Kealakekua Bay on February 14 and was leaving the islands for the North Pacific.

From 1922, the island was owned by James Dole to grow pineapples (at one time it produced 75% of the world's pineapples) but from 1985 control passed to Castle & Cooke who have developed the island as an exclusive resort destination. There are two resort hotels on Lānaʻi, both managed by Four Seasons Hotels: Mānele Bay and the Lodge at Kōʻele. along with two world class golf courses. The Experience at Koele was rated the best golf course by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler and the Challenge at Manele offers a sweeping ocean view at every hole.

The old plantation town of Lanai hasn't changed very much since the 1920's and is surrounded by beautiful giant Norfolk Island pines.

Eveving at Lanai, Hawaii

While in Lanai you should visit the Garden of the Gods in Kanepu'u, where rocks and boulders are scattered across a crimson landscape as if some divine being had placed them there as a sculpture garden.

From the tide pools to the mountains, the Hawaiian island of Lanai is one of the most diverse islands. The tide pools offer something for any age to explore and the mountains have everything from 4X4ing or mountain biking to horseback riding.

Lanai also has activities for all to enjoy such as croquet, skeet shooting, all the usual water sports, and more.
